Dress The Old Chair with Grass Cloth
Ramie, a natural and ecologically sustainable plant material, is used to make clothes in China for thousands of years. But its usage has rapidly decreased in recent decades. Based on the investigation and research on Ramie, the finding stated that Ramie could not only be made into fabrics and clothes but also have more using possibilities. For instance, Ramie fiber has many features (i.e., anti-corrosion, anti-insect, cooling functions, etc.). If these features enable to be used for protecting products (especially outdoor and public products), they may prolong the service life of these products in a good way. Therefore, this project aims to discover more design possibilities with this traditional material. The project redesigned two old chairs and one screen with Ramie. By wrapping around the old furniture, Ramie acts as a connecting tool, a protective surface, and a natural visualized effect.
Ramie Chair是基于可持续设计背景和弘扬中国传统手工艺与材料为导向的产品设计。这一设计主要通过回收废旧家具并利用苎麻这一传统中国材料对废旧家具进行再设计。
中国传统材料—苎麻，是一种天然且生态可持续的植物材料，几千年来在中国被用来制作夏衣（麻质衣服）。 但近几十年来，由于其工艺流程较为复杂且市场需求减少，其使用量迅速下降并逐渐淡出市场。 根据在湖南对苎麻植物与传统手工艺的全面且切实调查研究发现，苎麻不仅可以制成面料和服装，而且还有更多的使用可能性。 例如，苎麻纤维具有许多特性（即防腐、防虫、冷却功能等）。 如果这些特性能够用于保护产品（尤其是户外和公共产品），它们可能会很好地延长这些产品的使用寿命。与此同时，废旧家具的丢弃问题也随着社会快速发展慢慢显化。因此，结合苎麻本身因加工流程而行成的颜色变化，以及其拥有透气，防潮，防虫，降温解暑等特点，对收集来的二手椅子等家具通过缠绕的形式进行再设计，可以探索这种传统材料更多的设计可能性和应用广度。 该项目用苎麻重新设计了两把丢弃的破旧家具椅和一个屏风。 通过包裹旧家具，苎麻充当连接工具、保护表面和自然的视觉效果。
